    Abstract:

    Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) are a class of crystalline porous polymer that enables the use of pure organic building blocks to build extended polygon architectures and latticed polymer backbones. Recent progress has greatly enhanced the flexibility and accessibility of chemistry to design structures as well as functions, showcasing the emerging of this new field. From a chemistry perspective, COFs have the possibility of engineering pre-designed materials with tailor-made structural hierarchy. Importantly, COFs offer an irreplaceable platform for exploring multi-functional materials and molecular systems. In this talk, I will report our approaches to the chemistry of COFs and their structural origins of functions, by focusing on their inherent two-dimensional frameworks and one-dimensional channels.

    Biography:

    Donglin Jiang received his BSc degree (1989) from Zhejiang University and PhD degree (1998) from The University of Tokyo. In 1998. He took an assistant professorship (1998-2000) at The University of Tokyo and in 2000 he was appointed the group leader of AIDA Nanospace project, The Exploratory Research for Advanced Technology (ERATO), Strategic Basic Research Programs, Japan Science and Technology (JST). In 2005, he moved to Institute for Molecular Science (IMS), National Institutes of Nature Sciences (NINS) as an associate professor and took a concurrent associate professorship at The Graduate University for Advanced Studies (SOKENDAI), Japan, where he started his independent laboratory and initiated the field of covalent organic frameworks. During 2005-2009 and 2009-2013, he was appointed as a principal investigator by Precursory Research for Embryonic Science and Technology (PRESTO), Strategic Basic Research Programs, JST. In January 2016, he moved as a full professor to Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. From 2018, he was appointed the strategic hiring professor at National University of Singapore. His current research interest focuses on the development of two-dimensional polymers and covalent organic frameworks.
